Preparing for your employee orientation

Employee orientations are conducted remotely via MS Teams. A Benefit Services team member will email you the appointment for your new employee orientation. Documents you need to complete and sign will be done electronically via email whenever possible. It is important you respond to emails about your orientation and new hire paperwork promptly and submit any required forms or documents as requested by Benefit Services and by the due date provided.

To be best prepared for your orientation, please review or complete the following prior to your attendance:

  1. Be on time for your scheduled orientation, test in advance your technology for joining your online orientation meeting, and plan for orientation to take 1-2 hours.
  2. If needed, download Microsoft Teams for free.
  3. Benefit Services will email your new employee packet to you that includes forms required as part of your City of Sacramento employment. You should complete and sign as many of these forms as you can prior to attending your orientation.
  4. Review the forms and resources listed on this page.
  5. Complete the employee portion of the Form I-9. You will receive instructions via email to complete your Form I-9.
  6. The documents you use to verify your Form I-9 will need to be provided to the City. Do not send these documents via email. Staff will coordinate this with you.
  7. We must make a copy of your driver’s license and social security card for your employee file. Do not send these documents via email. Staff will coordinate this with you.
  8. If you qualify for City health benefits and plan to enroll any dependents on your benefits, you must provide dependent verification documents such as birth certificates, marriage certificate, or copy of legal guardianship for each dependent you are enrolling. You will need to have the social security number and birth dates of all dependents you’re enrolling on benefits or for choosing your life insurance beneficiaries. Dependents cannot be added to your health benefits until you have submitted the required verification documents.

Employee benefits

Benefit eligible new hires are encouraged to review the information on active employee benefits prior to attending orientation. Benefit eligible employees have 30 days from the date of hire to enroll in health benefits and complete all required paperwork. After 30 days you must experience a qualifying life event to enroll or change your benefits outside of the City's annual open enrollment period held in October.
