Hart Mission and History

History

In 1961, the City of Sacramento’s Youth, Parks, & Community Enrichment Department built one of the first facilities in California designed specifically for the enjoyment of older adults. It was

Thirty years later, in 1991, the center was remodeled and expanded in size in order to better meet the needs of the growing population of older adults in Sacramento.

The Sacramento Senior Center was renamed to honor Ethel MacLeod Hart after she bequeathed her entire estate to the City of Sacramento in 1992 for the “use, enjoyment and comfort of senior citizens.” Mrs. Hart was born in Canada in 1888 and lived to the age of 104. She arrived in California as a teenager, married, and shortly after, she and her husband bought the Delta Telephone and Telegraph Company located in Courtland. The couple operated the company for nearly 30 years. The Harts then moved to the Bay Area but traveled throughout their retirement. When her husband passed away in 1964, Mrs. Hart moved to midtown Sacramento and had an active life into her 90s.

Today, the Ethel MacLeod Hart Senior Center is the heart of operations for the City of Sacramento Older Adult Services division. Membership is NOT a requirement to participate in any of our classes or activities. In addition to providing a wide array of services, the center is a gathering place for people who come together to stretch their horizons, have fun, learn new things, make friends and discover the joys of life after age 50.
