Utilities Scams

Caller identification scams

City of Sacramento customers have recently been the target of telephone scams claiming that their utilities will be shut off if they don’t pay the caller money.

Here is some information you can use to help protect yourself against these types of scam calls:

  • Scam callers can disguise their caller ID phone numbers to look like City phone numbers and may claim to be from the City’s Department of Utilities. The Department of Utilities is not making these calls.
  • The callers may claim that your “utilities” will be shut off if you do not pay them money or gift cards, or they may ask for private information.
  • These calls appear to target Spanish-speaking customers.
  • The caller may ask if the person they are speaking to speaks Spanish and/or hang up if you say no.

The Department of Utilities does not call customers about accounts that have not paid their bill. Instead, a letter is sent directly to the customer, which alerts them the account is past due and describes payment options available to them.

If you suspect a call is coming from a fraudulent source, hang up the phone and call the City’s Department of Utilities Customer Service at 916-808-5454.

Door-to-door scams

Sacramento residents have been the target of door-to-door scammers who try to trick people into purchasing expensive and unnecessary water treatment equipment for their home.

These scammers misinform customers that their water is contaminated and/or they offer to conduct a home water “test” that falsely demonstrates their drinking water is contaminated.

If a resident is not home when the scammer attempts to contact them, they leave behind alarming flyers or brochures that look official but direct customers to call a private number.

The scam attempts to convince customers to purchase an expensive and unnecessary in-home water filtration system.

Here is some information you can use to help protect yourself against these types of scams:

  • City of Sacramento water meets or exceeds all federal and state regulations and that information is published in our Consumer Confidence Report.
  • If your water becomes unsafe to drink, the City of Sacramento will notify you and provide information on how to protect yourself.
  • If you are unsure if someone is an official representative of a water department, ask to see identification. All City of Sacramento staff carry badges that identify themselves as government officials.
  • If you are unsure if materials left behind are from an official source, you can call the City of Sacramento Department of Utilities at 916-808-5454.
  • Some people may choose to purchase or install water systems due to personal reasons, such as health conditions, or flavor preferences; if you decide to purchase a system, it is important to do thorough and independent research on the product.

The City’s Department of Utilities provides drinking water, stormwater, and wastewater services. It does not provide gas or electric utilities services.

The Federal Trade Commission and Better Business Bureau also offer advice to consumers on how to protect against scam calls.
