Transportation Technology

Leveraging technology to manage the system

The City of Sacramento represents the largest transportation jurisdiction in the region. The City’s transportation system plays an integral role in facilitating the movement of people and goods through the City and in the region.

The transportation system is being asked to support more functions than ever before, leveraging technology and data solutions helps the City plan, build, maintain, and operate the transportation infrastructure while improving safety, mobility, and reliability of the transportation networks. To achieve this the City has deployed an Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) that includes:

  • Traffic operations center (TOC)
  • 807 signalized intersections
  • Approximately 200 miles of broadband fiber optic traffic communication infrastructure
  • Advanced traffic signal controllers
  • Advanced traffic management systems for traffic signal control
  • Advanced pedestrian, bicycle and vehicle detection systems
  • Accessible pedestrian push buttons
  • Traffic monitoring cameras
  • Traffic monitoring station

To help with the planning and expansion of ITS the City developed Intelligent transportation system (ITS) master plan. The ITS Master Plan evaluates the City’s current and future ITS needs with a focus on effective investments in transportation to improve system safety, performance, and sustainability. This Plan builds upon the City’s existing ITS network and envisions a strategy to systematically implement innovative technologies to address the following overarching regional mission statement: To improve system safety, performance, sustainability, and reliability by ensuring efficient investments in regional smart transportation projects.

The City’s Intelligent transportation system (ITS) master plan is part of the Sacramento Regional ITS Architecture at Smart Region Sacramento.
