Containers for garbage, recycling, and organics must be:
All waste containers at the event must comply with the State’s signage and color mandates
Regardless of who provides the container or waste services – signage is always required.
If you are using a private waste hauler, they can provide signs, or you can design your own to depict the materials that will be generated at your event.
If creating your own signs, check with your hauler to confirm what they can and cannot accept in each container.
The city has created generic signs for public use. Another resource is CalRecycle at https://calrecycle.ca.gov/recycle/commercial/organics/prtoolkit/.
Haulers will sometimes supply smaller containers, or you can rent from event rental companies. Restaurant supply, office supply and home improvement stores sell containers in the required colors, black/gray, green and blue. Wire stands with bags and colored lids are also an option through Clear Stream Recycle Systems. Amazon and other online reailers offer termporary trash containers, including cardboard. Search for "recycling systems containers" online and you will see a host of options.
Bags are as important as containers. Check with your hauler on what clear and compostable bags they accept in their dumpsters.
Organizers of special events that are Runs or Walks need to have appropriate waste containers at their start/finish lines, where the bulk of participants will be gathering and there may be vendors. Correct containers are also required at hydration stations if they are on City property or in the public-right-of-way. The containers must be removed within two hours of the run or walk passing through the hydration station area.
Marches and Parades need to have the appropriate waste containers at their start/finish spots. The City reserves the right to require the type, placement, and number of containers along a parade or march route based on the type and size of event.
