A “Street Tree” is a tree planted in the City right of way, typically in landscape strips between the curb and the front of the sidewalk. In most cases, the back of the sidewalk is the edge of the right of way. However, in some cases, the right of way extends past the back of the sidewalk.
The following list of shade trees has been approved for use as street trees for the City of Sacramento:
Please plant responsibly. The trees listed here are suitable for the climate and soil conditions of the City of Sacramento and are the officially adopted list for street trees. This is not an exhaustive list, and other species and varieties will be considered on a case by case basis. Note that this list is a living document and that species recommendations may change as a result of performance, or to increase diversity. There are many reasons to select a specific variety, including flower or foliage color, crown form, tolerance to pests or diseases, irrigation and soil needs, adaptability, litter, pruning needs and other attributes. Consider the ultimate use of the tree, its ultimate size, its benefits and shortcomings and its cultural needs. Most healthy trees are removed because they outgrow the space allotted them, or create problems with surrounding improvements.
