City Operations
The City is committed to reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from its facilities and operations.
The City has made substantial emissions reduction progress in recent years. As of 2019, the City had reduced municipal energy use 34% since 2005. The 2019 Municipal Energy Benchmarking Report provides a detailed evaluation of City energy use and key energy-saving projects.
Municipal GHG emissions savings have come through a range of efforts including:
- LED retrofits of streetlights and City facilities
- 3.5 MW of solar installed at City facilities, as well as purchase of SolarShares electricity from SMUD
- "Zero-Emission Vehicle" first Fleet Purchasing policy, with ongoing efforts to work toward compliance with the State's Advanced Clean Fleets requirements
Upon full implementation, the Climate Action & Adaptation Plan (CAAP) measures are anticipated to achieve a 74% reduction in municipal GHG emissions below 1990 levels by 2030, and near-zero GHG emissions in 2045.
