Meet Lieutenant Chad Coughran

Lieutenant Chad Coughran was raised in Sacramento and began his law enforcement career as a deputy with the Sacramento Sheriff’s Office in 2007. He joined the Sacramento Police Department in 2009. As an officer, Chad served in patrol working assignments in every district in the city. He held assignments with the Crime Suppression Teams and Regional Transit. He eventually became a Field Training Officer where he trained and mentored several new officers. In 2016, Chad became a detective with the department’s Night Investigations Unit.

He then spent four years with the Homicide Unit, followed by time in Internal Affairs. In 2021, Chad promoted to Sergeant, serving time as a patrol supervisor and a Detective Sergeant with the Criminal Intelligence Unit. In 2024 Chad promoted to Lieutenant, and currently he is a Watch Commander with South Command in the Office of Operations.

Chad attended Sacramento State University where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration. Chad is an instructor and facilitator for the Robert Presley Institute of Criminal Investigation with the Homicide Investigations Course.

Chad is the recipient of the Sacramento Police Department’s Distinguished Service Award (2021). He also received a Life Saving Award from the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office (2009).
