Meet Lieutenant Brent Meyer

Lieutenant Brent Meyer joined the Sacramento Police Department in 1992, beginning his career as a high school intern. After being hired as a Student Trainee in 1994, Brent chose to pursue a path in law enforcement and became a Community Service Officer (CSO), working in the Patrol Division, as well as in the Robbery/Burglary – South Unit.

In 1997, Brent became a recruit in the police department’s extended police academy, Class 97BRE-2. After completing the academy in March 1998, he was sworn-in as a Sacramento police officer. During his time as a police officer, Brent has worked in the Patrol Division, within SPD’s Regional Community Policing Institute (RCPI), as a motorcycle officer in the Traffic Division, in the Bicycle Unit, and in the Training Division.

From 2001-2011, Brent served on the Board of Directors for the Sacramento Police Officers Association (SPOA) and Sacramento Police/Sheriff’s Memorial Foundation (SPSMF) from 2006-2009. With his appointment as SPOA’s President in 2007, he was the youngest officer at the time to have ever held this position.

Brent also served as the Vice President of the Peace Officers Research Association of California (PORAC), proudly representing SPD, and where he helped lead the largest statewide law enforcement labor organization in the United States from 2013-2018.

In addition to being appointed as a Commissioner on the City’s Community Racial Profiling Commission from 2007-2011, Brent also served as Co-Chairman of the California Gambling Control Commission’s Gaming Policy Advisory Committee from 2012-2016.

Brent has received the department’s Letter of Commendation (1993), Unit Citation (2004), and recognition as Employee of the Quarter (2020, 2023).

Brent promoted to the rank of Sergeant in March 2021, working in the Patrol Division and supervising the Entertainment Team. He also led the department’s Outreach & Recruiting Unit which was reorganized into the Backgrounds & Recruiting Unit in 2023.

Brent earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Criminal Justice Management. He has also been awarded the California POST Basic, Intermediate, Advanced, and Supervisory Certificates, as well as completed POST’s Sherman Block Supervisory Leadership Institute (SBSLI), Class 512, in 2023.

In February 2024, Brent was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant, and is currently assigned as a Watch Commander in the East Command.
