2016-07-11: Del Paso Blvd

Summary

On Monday, July 11, 2016, at 9:25 a.m., the Sacramento Police Department responded to reports from a citizen of an armed subject acting erratically near the 1100 block of Lochbrae Road. Several other witnesses described seeing a similar male black adult wielding a knife; one described him as having a firearm in his waistband.

When officers arrived in the area, citizens pointed out a man armed with a knife matching the description provided by witnesses. When officers tried to contact the man and de-escalate the situation, he threw an object at one of the police vehicles. Still armed with a knife, he took a combative posture towards officers while failing to comply with any commands given by them. During this time, the suspect was observed reaching for his waistband as if he was trying to retrieve a weapon. Officers made verbal contact with the man and issued multiple commands for him to drop the knife. Realizing that the subject was not going to comply with their orders, officers utilized a loud speaker in an attempt to alert nearby citizens in the area of the immediate threat this individual posed.

The man made his way to Del Paso Blvd where he came in close proximity to a woman before running into on-coming traffic. As another officer arrived on scene, the man charged that officer’s vehicle with a knife held above his head. Unable to safely get out of his vehicle, the officer quickly locked his doors and retreated.

The suspect continued northeast along Del Paso Boulevard towards a variety of open businesses. Officers continued to pursue the man who appeared to pose a significant risk to the community. Two additional officers arrived and chased after the subject near the 1300 block of Del Paso Road. The subject turned back towards them, armed with a knife. Fearing for their lives and the safety of the community, two officers discharged their firearms striking the man multiple times.
