Criminal Justice Academy

The Criminal Justice Academy is a four-year high school program structured as a "school within a school." The intent of the Academy’s courses is to prepare students for both college and careers.

Annual Report 2019-2020

The Criminal Justice Academy is a paramilitary type program modeled after the Sacramento Police Department’s Police Academy. The curriculum is law enforcement focused and coordinated with related academic classes. Academy students are expected to uphold the following standards:

Maintain an overall 2.0 GPA
Maintain an 80% attendance rate
Volunteer 50 hours of community service a year
Earn 90% of their credit requirements to qualify for graduation
Wear uniforms once a week and undergo uniform inspection
Participate in physical training

Students participate in a variety of motivational activities designed to encourage academic and occupational preparation, such as field trips, job fairs, leadership workshops, and academy-wide challenges. Students receive college mentorship each month and have the opportunity to receive college scholarships.

There are four area high schools with Criminal Justice Academies - John F. Kennedy, Hiram Johnson, C.K. McClatchy, and Grant Union. The Criminal Justice Academy programs at all four schools have resulted in the vast majority of its graduating seniors moving on to college immediately after graduating high school. Their graduation and college attendance rates surpass those of other students at their schools.

A fifth Public Safety Academy was established at Inderkum high school for the 2019-2020 school year and provides students with training in both the police and fire services.

Several students from our program have obtained jobs within the Police Department ranging from public service aides and CSI investigators to police officers.

Police Cadet Program

The Sacramento Police Department’s Police Cadet Program is designed for individuals aged 14 to 20 interested in a law enforcement career. Police Cadets receive training and hands-on experience in various aspects of law enforcement, leadership, physical fitness, life skills, and community service. Cadets meet weekly on Tuesdays from 6:30 - 8:30 p.m. at the Police Department’s Richards Boulevard substation.

Sacramento Police Activities League (Sac PAL)

The Sacramento Police Activities League is a proud program of the Sacramento Police Foundation, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that strives to make a difference in the lives of youth in under-served communities. Our Sac PAL programs have at least one Sacramento Police Officer who serves as a coach and/or mentor and helps foster positive relationships between law enforcement and the community. Together, employees of Sacramento Police Department and members of the community volunteer their time to provide valuable opportunities, develop leadership skills and teach meaningful life lessons that prepare participants for a better, more successful future. SacPAL programs include rugby, fishing, boxing, ski/snowboard club, and youth leadership training.

Our mission is to "instill in our youth positive citizenship principles through quality educational, recreational and civic programs." and we are committed to helping our youth by being a PAL!
