The Backgrounds and Recruiting Unit resides within the police department’s Personnel Division, with an overarching mission to foster community relationships, strengthen trust and support partnerships.
Specifically, when it comes to recruiting, our goal is to hire the very best and highest quality individuals to build a professional, vibrant, inclusive and progressive police department.
Chief Lester joined the Sacramento Police Department in 1994 as a dispatcher, became a community service officer in 1995 and a sworn officer in 1996. She has worked in Patrol, Traffic, Recruiting, Internal Affairs, Criminal Intelligence, and served as an Executive Lieutenant in the North Patrol Command. She has led the Contracts Services Division, Personnel and Fiscal Division, the Downtown Patrol Command, the Division of Outreach and Engagement and Police Services for the Sacramento City Unified School District. She also has overseen the Office of Specialized Services.
