City Council voted to give the Mayor resources to assist his office in fielding constituent concerns in the “deferred” areas of our city until 2024.
The redistricting process got a little complicated this year, so here’s a refresher on how this will work:
Every Councilmember is elected to serve a district, and we serve that district until we are elected to the new district boundaries. That means those of us in even numbered districts will continue to serve the pre-redistricting areas until an election is held for the new districts in 2024, and the new district lines for the odd numbered districts will take effect this year following the recent elections.
Some areas of the City, known as “accelerated” communities (for District 4, this includes the River Oaks and Land Park areas), will have two Councilmembers for the next two years. Other areas, known as “deferred” communities (including River District, East Sacramento and parts of Broadway), will not have a Councilmember until after the 2024 election. So the Mayor, as the elected official for the entire City, will be staffing up to be the lead office in managing constituent issues in the deferred areas to ensure that those residents are still fully served by the City.
Across the board, implementation of redistricting means robust collaboration between the Mayor and Council offices. We plan to stay engaged with our accelerated communities, of course following the lead of the newly elected Councilmembers. And we plan to support the Mayor in representing the deferred areas that will eventually become a part of District 4.
The District 4 office is here to help if you need us. We know all of this is a little confusing, so please don’t hesitate to reach out to us if you need assistance - we’ll be more than happy to connect you to the right folks or help directly when possible. Serving the constituents of Sacramento is a team effort and we’re always happy to hear from you, whether you’re in D4 or not.
