Biography of Councilmember Talamantes

After receiving her Bachelor of Science degree in Community and Regional Development from UC Davis, Karina worked with the White House Initiative on Educational Excellence at the US Department of Education under President Obama. Her work directly contributed to policy decisions that would close opportunity gaps among public school students nationwide, helping to create a more level playing field for all students in America. Upon returning to Sacramento, Karina worked for college access programs like Upward Bound and Educational Talent Search, where she helped hundreds of low-income and first-generation students continue their post-secondary education.

Councilmember Talamantes comes to the city council with a unique background in educational governance. She was elected Trustee for the Sacramento County Board of Education in 2018 and has been a leading proponent of increased education funding across the state. She also spent a few years recruiting talent for Fortune 500 companies in the private sector.

Professionally, she served as Chief of Staff to Sacramento Vice Mayor Angelique Ashby for five years prior to running for City Council in 2022, giving her the experience to hit the ground running for the newly redrawn district 3 representing the neighborhoods of Natomas, Northgate, and Gardenland.

Karina participates in the UC Davis Chicano-Latino Alumni Association, UC Davis Government and public policy Alumni Group, SheShares Program, and the Sacramento Digital Equity Coalition. She also serves on the following boards and commissions:

  • Downtown Sac. Revitalization Corporation
  • Lower American River Conservancy Comm (Vice Chair)
  • Sacramento Area Flood Control Agency (SAFCA)
  • Sacramento Public Library Authority (Vice Chair)
  • Sacramento Transportation Authority (STA)
  • Stadium Area Enhanced Infrastructure Financing District Public Financing Authority

The City of Sacramento is beautiful, diverse, and brimming with talent. Karina believes the time is now to bring bold, new leadership to City Hall and highlight the common goal of making Sacramento an incredible place to live.

Councilmember Talamantes helped pass a $172 million dollar school bond for Natomas Unified School District, ran one of the largest COVID-19 vaccinations clinics in the Sacramento region, helped organize the Women’s March in Sacramento, and is always looking for ways to give back to the community.

In her limited free time, you can find Karina at her local park with her Yellow Lab, Ash, and playing soccer, helping her family run one of their two award-winning businesses, or spending time with her family.

Family, for Karina, comes first, second, and third in life. Everything she has achieved is due to her support system, her biggest cheerleaders, and the people she turns to for everything. Karina is the proud Auntie of Marc, Elina, Lucas, Michael, Alyson, and Andres.
