A Transient Occupancy Tax (TOT) of 12% is charged for all people who exercise occupancy at a hotel in the City of Sacramento (City Code 3.28). They are considered transient if they stay for a period of 30 days or less. TOT forms are remitted to the City, by the hotels on a monthly basis. The City has developed some guidelines on which common hotel charges are taxable.
The City provide for TOT exemptions in limited circumstances. A TOT exemption form must be submitted to the hotel at time of check-in.
The Sacramento Tourism Marketing District (STMD) was established as of July 1, 2012. The rate varies based on the location of the hotel. The STMD form is submitted monthly by the lodging providers along with the TOT.
The Sacramento Tourism Infrastructure District was approved by City Council on October 30, 2018. It is 1% of gross room rent for all short term stays. The STID form is submitted monthly by the lodging providers along with the TOT.
A Service Fee will soon be applied to credit card transactions to cover processing costs. Service fees are valuable tools to help the City operate more efficiently and create a better customer experience. If you prefer not to pay a 'Service Fee', there are still various self-serve payment methods available. Additionally, you can utilize more traditional payment methods, such as ACH (where accepted), checks or money orders which can be mailed or submitted in person. Thank you for your understanding.
