Keep in mind that the cat most likely has a home nearby. In general, cats don’t roam very far from home. We encourage you to return the cat to the location where the cat was found because most cats don't roam more than 6-7 houses from where they live. Friendly neighborhood cats tend to be indoor and outdoor cats and are not lost at all. They are simply roaming, which is perfectly legal in the city of Sacramento and something that cats love to do.
You can go to a shelter or a vet in order to simply have the cat scanned. Check with your neighbors because it is always best to knock on doors versus bringing the cat to our shelter. Leaving a friendly cat at the shelter greatly reduces the chances for the cat to get home where the cat belongs. Unfortunately, a cat's chance of ever being reunited with an owner after entering a shelter is dramatically low.
