Clean Technology and Energy

The clean technology and energy cluster is a target for economic development due to the presence of strong regional initiatives that have targeted growth and development of this cluster since 2005 (e.g. Green Capital Alliance, CleanStart and Greenwise). A study of this cluster in the Sacramento Region identified approximately 200 establishments supporting over 3,000 jobs and $846 million of annual sales.

The proprietary Green Technology Firm database created for this study shows that the City of Sacramento contains about 25 percent of the Region’s Clean Energy Technology establishments (including one of the larger and more visible firms in the clean transportation and energy efficiency segments, Airco Mechanical) with close to 34 percent of the estimated cluster jobs and 55 percent of annual sales. Most of the Clean Energy Technology firms in the city fall within the clean energy and energy efficiency segments of the cluster.

  • Pacific Ethanol is a leader in producing and marketing low-carbon renewable fuels in the Western part of the United States.
  • Greenleaf Power, LLC. provides green power to North America. The Sacramento-based company uses technology to covert material from the agricultural, construction and timber industries into electricity.
  • Airco Mechanical provides energy and cost efficient mechanical systems for major commercial, industrial and institutional projects throughout the Sacramento region.
  • Mitsubishi Rayon is a manufacturer of carbon fiber for use in Aerospace, sporting goods, industrial and alternative energy applications.
  • Capital Energy Solutions provides quality software to its customers while adhering to their energy efficient goals.
  • SunTechnics Energy Systems is a worldwide leading supplier of turnkey systems for the utilization of renewable energy with sales offices in seventeen different countries.

  • The Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD), has over 10,000 miles of power lines that serves the energy needs of the Sacramento community.
  • The City of Sacramento has earned the Green Economic Development Leadership Award for its Clean Energy Sacramento Program which enables building owners to finance renewable energy and energy efficiency upgrades over the long-term through their property taxes.
  • Brookings Institution ranks Sacramento Region 3rd in Top 100 metros for concentration of Green Jobs.
  • Sacramento is one of top 10 cities adopting smart grid technology.

Regional efforts

  • Sacramento Clean Cities Coalition. The Sacramento Clean Cities Coalition is a government-industry partnership designed to reduce petroleum consumption in the transportation sector.
  • Sacramento Area Sustainable Business Program. The Sacramento Area Sustainable Business Program promotes businesses that take voluntary actions to prevent pollution and conserve resources. 
  • Sacramento Metropolitan Air Quality Management District. The Sacramento Metropolitan Air Quality Management District’s mission is to achieve clean air goals. The District has four divisions. An administrative, land use/mobile, program coordination and stationary source divisions.
  • California Smart Grid Center (CSGC). The CSGC at Sacramento State University focuses on ways to stop relying on traditional non-renewable energy sources, while innovating mechanisms to provide new renewable energy sources.
