The City of Sacramento funds and operates approximatly 1,350 shelter spaces every night for people experiencing homelessness. These include:

  • Congregate Shelters -- Traditional emergency shelter programs where the living situations are similar to group-living dormitories.
  • Non-Congregate Shelters -- Emergency shelter programs where the living situations are private (e.g., motel rooms, sleeping cabins, etc.)
  • Safe Ground -- Safe and stable sites for camping where households can engage with 24/7 staff to identify barriers to housing and transition to indoor programs, including permanent housing.
  • Transitional Housing -- Temporary housing with supportive services for individuals and families experiencing homelessness with the goal of interim stability and support to successfully move to and maintain permanent housing.
  • Respite Centers -- Locations where community members can temporarily escape the elements and have basic needs met (food, water and shelter). Respite centers also serve as an “entry point” into services, providing a safe and stable place for people to be while waiting to access more comprehensive community programs.
