The SAFE Credit Union Convention and Performing Arts District brings the region together with three distinct venues, the SAFE Credit Union Convention Center, SAFE Credit Union Performing Arts Center and the Sacramento Memorial Auditorium. The district also features a 15,000 square foot plaza.
Built in 1927, Sacramento Memorial Auditorium is one of the most recognizable and beloved buildings in the region. Listed on the National Historic Register the Memorial Auditorium has drawn audiences to a variety of events for over 90 years. From big bands and violin virtuosos to the Beach Boys and Rolling Stones. More recently the auditorium stage has welcomed artists such as Bob Dylan, Karol G, Michael Buble, Yo Yo Ma and Billy Strings, comedians George Lopez, Mike Epps, Tom Segura and Amy Schumer and bands such as Tedeschi Trucks Band, Primus and Brothers Osborne. Memorial Auditorium is a sentimental venue for the many thousands of graduates from regional high schools, colleges and professional schools that hold their commencements each May and June in the building. It has lived up to its mission as a multi-purpose venue, as it still serves as the venue of choice for not only entertainment and sporting events but meetings, conferences, banquets, receptions and speaking engagements.
Built in 1974, and originally opened as the Community Center Theater, the 2,188 seat SAFE Credit Union Performing Arts Center reopened in 2021 after a major renovation bringing the building up to modern technical standards with audience and performer comfort and convenience in mind. The performing arts center is home to Broadway Sacramento's series Broadway On Tour, the Sacramento Ballet, Sacramento Philharmonic and Opera, Sacramento Choral Society and Orchestra and the Sacramento Speaker Series. Each season enjoy shows like HAMILTON and WICKED, Sacramento Ballet’s annual tradition NUTCRACKER, powerful musical performances by our city’s own Sacramento Philharmonic and Opera and Sacramento Choral Society and Orchestra and engaging speakers such as Doris Kearns Goodwin, Michael Pollan and Dr. Jane Goodall and Dr. Anthony Fauci. The venue also features national touring shows boasting past performances from David Byrne, Carol Burnett, The Avett Brothers, Johnny Mathis, Los Angeles Azules and Hasan Minhaj to name a few.
